“So God created mankind in his own image…” – Genesis 1:27
I shared in my blog 75 Pounds about my weight loss story. I shared how I wanted to lose weight to not only feel better about myself, but more importantly to look good. I remember seeing people around me that looked better than me and I began to want that body type. I wanted to be in shape and to look like those on the cover of magazines.
My wife and I are expecting the birth of our first child and to be completely honest…she’s going to be the coolest baby ever. I’ve already got the warning to expect to be buying and receiving lots of Barbie dolls as presents. Being a guy I have never been a fan of Barbie, but after watching this video…I’m definitely not a fan of her.
How many times in our lives do we do the same? We compare ourselves to these images on magazine covers and even dolls that have impossible body dimensions and we believe that is the norm. We develop the mindset that Barbie is the model for perfection. I mean she does have an insane amount of accessories, a good-looking boyfriend and a sweet car…but from the video we see that she’s not perfect.
We need to remind ourselves, and those around us, that we are created in the image of God. That each of us looks a little like God. Just like my daughter could have my nose, my chin, or my forehead…she resembles me…we resemble God. We are created in the image of a perfect and holy being. So maybe that I have a scar on my forehead, my ear lobes connect to the side of my head, or that I have stretch marks from my weight gain isn’t as important as the fact that I’m created in the image of God.
