Close in Case of Fire!

Pelee Island Ferry

I’ve recently visited Pelee Island, and while crossing from the mainland on the ferry, I noticed this sign, on a Bow Thruster Compartment Exhaust – “Close in Case of Fire”: how many times, I wonder, should we also heed that directive when we are ready to ‘zap’ somebody with our spiteful, fiery words. It would be wise of us to consider this command for our mouths – Close in Case of Fire!

Ecclesiastes 12:11 The words of the wise are like goads (NKJV)

In The Midst Of Wolves

Sometimes I wonder why Jesus had no hesitation in sending his disciples out into a hostile environment.

What did He want us to know when he warned his disciples?

“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” Matthew 16:10

Jesus certainly didn’t expect his disciples to be devoured. They had a message to deliver. A story to ensure. A ministry to perform. A hope to offer.  A mission to complete.

Jesus knew exactly what He was doing when He commissioned His disciples to witness of the truth. He knew his disciples would meet snarling, angry adversaries. He knew. Yet, Jesus sent them anyway. He forewarned them and instructed them to be “wise as serpents”. Serpents, snakes. They are cautious and careful. They know how to hide in crevices when danger comes their way. They know how to settle in and wait till the time is right, then strike quickly and move on.

Serpents are considered deceitful, and full of guile–as was the serpent in the Garden of Eden. From that day on, the LORD condemned them to slither on the ground and eat the dust of man. Serpents have the power to instill fear in the hearts of man and woman. They have the intuition to confound. Yet, serpents, according to Jesus, are wise. Though His disciples were to be as wise as serpents, Jesus instructed them to be “harmless as doves”–or guileless, innocent…without leaving poisonous venom behind. Without the deceit of their adversaries. Innocent. Pure. Sacrificial. Filled with truth.

A dove is one of the most docile of birds.

Once when my son was a teenager, he took me out to an apple tree to show me a mother dove sitting on her nest of eggs. As he pulled back the leaves, she sat there. Undisturbed. Seemingly fearless. Perhaps her bravery was because she was protecting her own. I do not know. But when I read how Jesus instructed us to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves, this picture of the mother dove comes to mind.

Of course we could have harmed her. We could have knocked her out of her nest and crushed her eggs. But she simply stared at us. Her heart may have been beating a mile a minute, but we were not privy to her fear…she seemed harmless and she treated us as harmless. Perhaps she was as wise as a serpent. To have left her nest, it could have been the certain demise for her young. She was willing to take the fall, be sacrificed if need be, to protect and care for her own.

As we witness and go about our Judeas, Jerusalems, and uttermost parts of the earth, we might remember well the fearlessness of that mother dove. As Christians we have our LORD’s might and truth to protect us “in the midst of wolves”. We dare not leave the nest and let our adversaries destroy our young. We must sit in the face of peril. We must stare it down if need be. Then if we are destroyed, we will have fought the good fight and died without shame as a legacy for those who come after us.

PRAYER: Lord, give us Your wisdom to listen before we speak and act. To think before we write. Let us be ever mindful to do no harm as we walk in the world of adversaries who hate You.  Give us courage wherein You call us to go out into the midst of wolves.

It Is Not Only The Old Who Are Wise

I came across these verses this morning in my Bible reading…

“I thought, ‘Age should speak; advanced years should teach wisdom.’ But it is the spirit in a person, the breath of the Almighty, that gives them understanding.”

It is not only the old who are wise, not only the aged who understand what is right.

Job 32:7-9

What wisdom those verses share! Sometimes we automatically assume that just because someone is older than us, that that makes them wiser. In fact, sometimes we assume that just because someone has more experience in a certain area than us – that they must know what they are talking about, and be wiser than us.

I think we’re wrong to blatantly assume that just because somebody has more skills or experience or years living on the planet than us…that they are more likely to be right in their thinking than we are.

In fact, I’ve seen many people who are very experienced in certain areas of life – very wrong about things at times.

It is the Holy Spirit that gives us wisdom and discernment. If we lose that connection with the spirit that lives inside of us….it doesn’t matter where we are, what we do, or how much we’ve done it – we lose a great cord of wisdom in our lives.

A little child can have more wisdom than an adult at times. An apprentice can have more wisdom than his master. For age and experience don’t lend themselves to maturity automatically. Very brilliant and experienced people can still be very immature.

I’ve seen it.

I want the “breath of the Almighty” to breathe into me. I want Him to give me understanding and wisdom. In order for that to happen, I need to do what it takes to make myself right with God. Then I will have the greatest access of all…..for God wants to speak to me. He wants to breathe into me.

May I be HIS vessel.

Consider God’s Steadfast Love

Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.
Psalm 107:43

Throughout this Psalm the Psalmist recalls the merciful work of God to deliver people from trouble and distress. We serve a powerful God who frequently uses his power on behalf of his people. Through his acts of deliverance he demonstrates his love. We are loved by the One who controls all the power of the universe.

But God has not shown us his love so that we can relax and enjoy the feeling of being loved. Nor has God delivered us from trouble so that we can go on about our lives in safety and comfort. All that God does is for this end: to lead us to consider the steadfast love of the Lord.

Out of his love, God has created us for himself. We were made to live in constant communion with God. Some people treat this as a curse, insisting that they be allowed to live for money or power or drugs or sex or television or a million other minuscule pleasures. Those things are not even mites of dust compared to the glory of God. We were created to dwell in God’s glory, to worship him in his holiness, to celebrate his love. Anything else is folly.

What is your response to God’s goodness? Do you take his blessings as a call for worship? Do you praise him for his love? Do you celebrate even in times of trouble and distress, knowing he will deliver you? Or do you sit back, turn on the television, and forget the God who has blessed you with his steadfast love?

Christian, consider the steadfast love of the Lord.

Wisdom From Above

For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding…
Proverbs 2:6

We do not wander this world aimlessly or in the dark. Whatever trouble you face, whatever decision you wrestle with, there is wisdom and light offered from above. For the Lord gives wisdom, says the proverb. He does not hold it tightly, he is not stingy with it, he gives it freely to his people.

Wisdom is not the ability to say witty, insightful things but is the ability to live life well. In James 1:5-6 we are told how to receive godly wisdom: If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. God will generously grant wisdom to all who by faith ask for it.

But what if you find your faith a weak and frail thing? Follow the example of the father who laid his doubts at the feet of Christ: I believe; help my unbelief! (Mark 9:24).

God will grant wisdom to all who ask for it. There will be no messages in the sky, no angelic visitors, but through the Holy Spirit God will grant to us the knowledge and insight we need to live life well.

Do not walk this day in the so-called wisdom of this world. Neither Hollywood nor politicians nor the world’s loftiest philosophers know the secret to a full life. Such knowledge is found only at the mouth of God and he has promised to speak wisdom to all who ask.
