“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42, NIV)
As I sat down to have my quiet time and began praying, God revealed to me just how self-centered my life and prayers have become. It is a common occurrence for many of us to approach God with the day’s agenda in hand and pray for his blessing on all we have planned. What God actually desires is that we lay aside our own agenda and empty ourselves so that he can fill us with his Holy Spirit and accomplish his plans and purposes through us.
All too often we let the Bad Bees – busyness, bitterness, and blindness – rob us of God’s best for us. Because we overextend ourselves by planning too much activity, it becomes difficult to focus on anything but the stress resulting from our busy schedules. We harbor bitterness toward others and sometimes even towards God because life just doesn’t turn out the way we expect it to. Eventually spiritual blindness sets in because we are too distracted and worried by the cares of life to see that God is in control, loves us in spite of our flaws, and cares about every detail of our frazzled lives.
If we can learn to exterminate the Bad Bees in our lives and pray for God to fill us with his Holy Spirit each day, then we will find ourselves anointed, empowered, and effective witnesses in a world that desperately needs the hope and joy that only God can give.
Don’t let the Bad Bees rob you of God’s peace and hinder his power at work in you. Forget the bug spray – a good dose of truth from God’s Word each day will help you keep the Bad Bees away!
