“8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.” -1 John 1:8-10
Even just the sound of the word makes us cringe. When you think of a sinner you probably think of an addict, a murderer or the person who cheats on their spouse more than their taxes.
It is easy for us to label those who are addicted to drugs or cheaters as sinners, but what about us? Maybe you don’t cheat on your taxes or spouse. Maybe you once were addicted to drugs, but have since kicked the habit.
The tiny pill to swallow is that we’re all sinners…
The hard pill to swallow is that there is no levels of sin…a sin is a sin.
We often pass judgment on the people we see sinning and think “I’d never do that.” and the truth is…you may be right. You may never struggle with a certain temptation or give into a certain sin, but we all have our forbidden fruit. We all have something that is larger than ourselves. Something that no matter how hard we try we cannot defeat it on our own, thus, our need for Jesus.
1 John 1 teaches…we confess….He forgives.
We all sin.
We all MUST confess.
We all NEED forgiveness.
