“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called the children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1, NIV)
Shortly before our birth, or perhaps years before we were even conceived, each of us was given a name. Whether or not we realize it, our names carry a great deal of meaning. Some of us live up to our names. My daughter Joy, for instance, is gifted at creating joy in the lives of others and encouraging me when the stress of life threatens to steal my joy. It was never my plan to name her Joy, but my sister’s firstborn daughter was given the name Grace, my first choice of a girl’s name. God knew that my niece would need extra grace to deal with unforeseen challenges and that she would live up to her name as He wrote His testimony of grace in her life.
Those of us who have received Christ as Savior go by many names: Redeemed, Beloved, Victorious, Aroma of Christ, Bride of Christ, Saint, Righteous One, just to name a few. We are Christians, or Christ-bearers, made in the image of God to shine in a dark and sinful world and draw others to the light of His love and salvation.
Are you living up to the name God has given you? Or have you determined that you can never be who God says you are? When you look in the mirror today, pray for His eyes to see yourself the way He sees you. Don’t continue to walk in defeat and regret. If you have confessed your sins, your past is behind you and your sin has been forgiven and forgotten by the One whose name you bear. Beloved of God, He has called you by name and you are His (Isaiah 43:1)!
