1 Samuel 16:7b-The LORD does not look at the things people look at (NIV).”
There was too much of him for comfort. He often heard people talking about how big and ugly he was. The only noble part of him was his name. Winston. His namesake, Winston Churchill was one of the most influential political leaders of the twentieth century. Unfortunately, mean-spirited people began to call him Ben….because he looked taller than England’s Big Ben clock tower.
Ben’s heart was as big as his body. He always did his best, no matter what. Finally, somebody realized Ben’s 17.5 height could be an advantage. Ian knew what Ben was capable of and in 1984 he brought the young lad to Canada.
In spite of Ben’s health problems over the years, he and Ian Miller accomplished the following.
Won over $1.5 million in prize money
First to win 2 consecutive World Cup
Final titles 1988 Gothenburg and 1989 Tampa, Florida Team
Individual Gold medals at the 1987 Pan Am Games, Indianapolis
Member of the 4th place Team at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles
2nd World Cup Final’s in 1986 Gothenburg
5th World Cup Final’s in 1987 Paris
Member of the 4th place Team at the Show Jumping World Championships,
Aachen Winner of Masters Grand Prix at Spruce Meadows in 1987 and 1991
Member of the 4th place Team at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul
Winner of Grand Prix of Stuttgart 1989
Winner of Grand Prix of Bordeaux 1989 Canadian National Show Jumping Champion 1988, 1991 and 1993
Won the Spruce Meadows Derby 6 times in eight years (the Chrysler Classic in ’86,’87 and ’89 and the Shell Cup in ’91,’92 and ’93)
One of only two horses inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.
People loved Big Ben. Fans even sent him cards and made bran muffins for him. They wished that they had a horse with a heart as big as Ben’s.
Now if Big Ben (17.5 hands high or 180 centimetres) could make such a difference in his world, we can make a difference in ours. We are where we are for a purpose. We are perfectly right for our place in life. God never makes a mistake.
1 Samuel 16:7b-The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart (NIV).”
Prayer- Lord, fill our hearts with something worth looking at. For Jesus’ sake. Amen
