Psalm 119:1-8 1   Devotional

The Bible is full of God’s promises, guidance, and wisdom. Psalm 119:1-8 is a great example of how we can approach the Bible to meditate upon it, gain a rich meaning from it, and draw near to God through it. This devotional will break down these 8 verses and provide us with insight into how to apply its teachings in our daily lives.

Scripture Commentary

Psalm 119:1-2 starts us off by letting us know that the psalmist delights in following God’s commands. This lets us know that his faith was devoted to the Lord’s laws, even when they were hard to keep. He goes on in vv 3-4 to talk about the importance of keeping those laws and seeks help from God when he falters. In vv 5-6 he proclaims his loyalty to the Lord’s commandments and speaks about his desire for understanding them more fully. Finally in vv 7-8 he praises God for His mercy and asks Him for guidance as he continues on his journey of faithfulness.

Meaning for Today

These verses teach us an important lesson: that we should strive to be obedient followers of God no matter what circumstances arise. Oftentimes it can be difficult to follow His commands because they don’t align with what society tells us is right or best for ourselves; however, if we focus on pleasing Him instead of gratifying our own desires then everything else will eventually fall into place (Matthew 6:33). We also learn that there is nothing wrong with asking for help when we find ourselves struggling – this shows humility which is essential for true spiritual growth (James 4:10). Lastly, these verses remind us that despite any failures or missteps along our path towards holiness, God still loves and forgives us; all we have to do is ask Him for strength so that we may continue on our journey (Romans 8:28).
